Early Life and Struggles:

Hailing from Baracara, a small community with limited resources, Shamar Joseph’s childhood lacked modern amenities such as internet facilities and telephones. Growing up with three sisters and five brothers, Joseph found inspiration in West Indies cricket legends Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. His early cricket experiences involved playing tape ball games with fruits as makeshift cricket balls in what was dubbed “jungle-land cricket” in Baracara.

Before venturing into professional cricket, Joseph worked in the logging industry alongside his siblings and father. However, a near-miss incident with a falling tree prompted him to move to New Amsterdam in search of better opportunities to support his family.

Transition to Cricket:

In New Amsterdam, Joseph initially worked in construction and later as a security guard at Amalgamated Security Services in Scotiabank. Balancing his demanding 12-hour shifts, Joseph’s passion for cricket led him to make a life-altering decision—quitting his security guard job to pursue cricket full-time, with the support of his fiancée.

Domestic Career:

Shamar Joseph’s breakthrough in cricket came through Romario Shepherd, who introduced him to the Guyana cricket team. His talent caught the eye of Guyana head coach Esuan Crandon, and he made an impactful debut with figures of 6/13 in Division 1 cricket. Joseph’s impressive performances in first-class cricket earned him a call-up for the Guyana Harpy Eagles in the Regional Four Day Competition.

His journey continued with a stint as a net bowler for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2023 Caribbean Premier League, eventually making the squad as an injury replacement. Joseph’s ability to consistently bowl short-pitched deliveries at speeds exceeding 140 kph showcased his potential.
