To Doug Johnson & Teri Johnson, Shawn Johnson was born on January 19, 1990, in Des Moines, Lowa. Her father, Doug Johnson was a business person. She started her career as a gymnast at the age of three. At the age of six, she became the first student of Liang Chow at a gymnast school in West Des Moines. He trained her for almost 2 decades.

She attended Valley High School and balanced her lifestyle by giving 25 hours per week to gymnastic training. In 2008, she had to leave her public school because she relocated with her mother to Los Angeles, California. She finished high school in 2010 by taking private classes. In 2013 she got admission to Vanderbilt University but withdrew before the classes began.

Gymnast Shawn Johnson began her career when she was only 12 years old. Coach Marta Karolyi soon invited Johnson to national team training camps and Johnson qualified Junior International Elite on her first attempt.
